Doty focuses on a recurring sequence of rhetorical questions and onamatopias to represent the Retrievers disapproving outlook on the societal world. Sorry, but copying text is forbidden on this website.
The Dog views himself as a friend to its owner, and although the Dog is distracted with running, chasing squirrels, and fetching, the Dog also is aware of hxwk owner Doty uses the playful thoughts of a dog while Hughes contrasts with the stark thoughts of a commanding hawk.
Poems such as these show how a powerful life works in comparison of a very simple life with less things in mind. These lines shows the retrieevals as a predator that must attack and eat which shows a darker side of the hawk.

Doty is primarily concerned with expressing a dog’s surpressed feelings about his discontent with the societal world. Hughes portrays the hawk as being thankful to God for his blessed body.
